BEXAR COUNTY, Texas —
In anticipation of mosquito-borne viruses Bexar County has started their mosquito prevention. They use three different methods to help protect residents.
On a regular basis the county sprays a chemical into the air killing adult mosquitoes, they also drop chemical pellets, known as “dunks” into stagnant water to kill mosquito larva and then on a weekly basis they trap and test mosquitoes for Zika and West Nile.
“We’re typically able to do a full circuit of the county about five to six times during a mosquito season,” said Renee Green with the Bexar County Public Works Department.

Like the county, the city of San Antonio also uses dunks to fight against mosquitoes. The chemical pellets are their main method to combat the pesky creatures. The city will spray, but not on a regular basis, like the county, only for certain circumstances.
“Logically they’re [dunks] more effective, because if you can get them before they emerge as adults, then they have not had an opportunity to breed or lay more eggs or bite any humans,” said Colleen Bridger with Metropolitan Health District.
San Antonio just received a $800,000 federal grant to help fight mosquitoes. The money will be used for their lab and to hire two environmental health specialists.
