Scoliosis is the sideways curvature of the spine. It begins most often during the growth spurt just before puberty and most cases are mild with very few symptoms. About 3% of all kids have scoliosis and severe cases can be painful and debilitating.
An especially severe spinal curve can reduce the amount of space within your chest, making it difficult for your lungs to function properly.
Children who have mild scoliosis are usually monitored with X-ray, to see if the curve is getting worse.
