Problem solving is one of the most difficult skills to teach in the math classroom. One of the reasons this is the case is likely because we as teachers want it to happen in nice sequential steps like solving a math problem....
But problem solving is MESSY! There are no set steps that will guarantee that our students will reach the answer at the end of the problem.
..and pretending like we can do a simple set of steps like CUBES or some other mnemonic is likely only going to work with a small handful of students that are ALREADY GOOD problem solvers.
Teach your students to THINK and how to ORGANIZE their thinking.
Read about a strategy that worked for my English language learners, I bet it will help your students too!
