There are so many ways I could think to say this. It feels like writing an award acceptance speech. I could say the obvious things like I never imagined I would be here when when we set sail in 2004. Or, that I could not have done it without the help and love of so many people along the way. But, I think the best way that I could convey what reaching this milestone means to me is to explain why I am still on this ship after 20 years.

Quick backstory: As I prepared to teach my first ever dance class, I distinctly remember wanting the experience to feel like we had gone on a journey together. I wanted it to have a clear beginning, middle and end. And, I wanted the end to be a moment of solidarity, to bond us in positivity before sending everyone back into the real world. To that end, I came up with the idea to huddle, put our hands in and break on the words “all love”. Though I understood the feeling I wanted to convey with that action and those words, I had no idea how far reaching the effects would be.

Since then, “all love” has been said thousands of time by tens of thousands of people, as we use it at events, performances, staff meetings and, of course, every single class we have ever taught. Sometimes, they are just words. But, sometimes, they are a mental centering point, a call to action, and even a lifeboat. For us, it has become the foundational philosophy guiding everything we do.

FUNKMODE gives me an opportunity to create the world as I wish to see it. It is how I express my deeply held beliefs as to how humans should relate to one another. I cannot control what happens in almost every single place on Earth. But, at FUNKMODE, I can craft a little oasis where people are given a chance to be themselves, enjoy their lives and celebrate one another as they seek to recreate and improve themselves. To me, that is the essence of “all love”. As long as I can keep creating that space for others, I will rejoice in doing this work. As I enter my 21st year of living these precious words, I consider myself so fortunate, and I am brimming with gratitude. Thank you for being part of this journey with us. May we continue together in this spirit for twenty more.
