Someone once said that if you leap through the center of a freshly made wreath, you'll be transported to a magical winter wonderland, filled with elves and twinkling lights and candy and talking snowmen.

This is one of the views from our tree lot. A bridge on I-185 spanning Whittlesey Road. No big deal, until it's no longer there, then it's a really big deal. When Hurricane Helene hit Western North Carolina, over 650 public bridges were destroyed or damaged, rendering most local roads impassable. The estimate on the number of private bridges damaged is in the thousands.

Enter Lansing's Bridge to Recovery.

If you're familiar at all with the mountains of North Carolina, those that live there have little bridges all over the place, spanning creeks, streams, rivulets, ravines, and rivers. Helene destroyed almost all of them, trapping families and farmers on their land and making relief efforts next to impossible.

The people of Lansing's Bridge immediately recognized this as a critical and overlooked challenge in the region, and so they went to work, first as volunteers and now as an official nonprofit. Their work is saving both lives and livelihoods, and it's being done by local people with expert knowledge and deep connections to the people there. Building bridges literally AND metaphorically.

After 40+ years in business, this is a view we're accustomed to. We've always been thankful for it. This year, however, we're counting our blessings ten-fold, as it's a sight we weren't certain we'd see. Hurricane Helene brought an extraordinary amount of devastation to our people in Western North Carolina and Eastern Tennessee. Many roads and bridges are still impassable, and hundreds of families remain in temporary shelters, having had their homes completely destroyed by floods. It's no minor miracle that we're open today; our growers worked tirelessly to rebuild roads, clear fields, and piece together the equipment and crews needed to harvest these trees. We're so very, very grateful for each and every one of them.

In their same spirit of community, we've chosen to give back a portion of our profits this year to several charities up there doing incredible work on the ground. You'll hear about them here as the season progresses, and if you feel so inclined, we imagine they'd welcome your support as well.

In the meantime, we wish you a Happy Thanksgiving. We wouldn't be us without you being you, so thank YOU for being one of the most important parts of Kimi Farms over the years.
