One of the most exciting parts of our Asheville trip was getting to visit the which is the largest privately owned house in the country, and it was breathtaking in its sheer size and scope! The architecture was absolutely incredible, and even though it was built in the late 1800s, many of the design elements would be just as popular in a home today!

The architect, Richard Morris Hunt, designed this home for George Washington Vanderbilt II, and it’s just one of many incredible works of his, including the great hall of The Met in NYC and The Breakers, another Vanderbilt mansion in Newport, RI.

The outside landscape was just as incredible and beautiful too. The views were stunning, and the gardens and pergolas were gorgeous.

The estate was a very inspiring look at how design that’s over a 100 years old can be just as relevant in homes today. It really made me think about how I can incorporate the past into my current projects, and I really hope to one day visit again!
