This past weekend, Paws Humane Society was honored to partner with Church of the Highlands for Pets & Prayer, a free drive-thru vaccine, microchip, and prayer clinic for our community.
Through this partnership, we provided care to 263 pets and their families at absolutely no cost. That means 263 families left with their pets protected, cared for, and supported because of the generosity of our staff, volunteers, donors, and community partners.
The demand was greater than anything we have experienced at a previous event. Cars began lining up hours before the clinic opened, and despite serving hundreds of animals, we were unable to safely accommodate everyone before our allotted supplies, staffing, and event time reached their limits.
To the families we were unable to serve, we are truly sorry. Turning people away is never our goal, and it is one of the most difficult parts of hosting events like this.
We must also address the disrespect, hostility, and negative comments directed toward our staff and volunteers both during the event and in the days that followed. That behavior was unacceptable.
Every person working this event spent their Saturday serving the community in temperatures nearing 100 degrees. While these services were free to the families receiving them, they were not free to provide. An event of this size requires months of planning, significant financial resources, vaccines and medical supplies, traffic coordination, and a team willing to give their time and energy to help others.
Our staff and volunteers showed up, worked hard, stayed beyond the scheduled event time, and helped as many families as they safely could. In the days following the event, they also continued responding to questions and concerns from those we were unable to serve. They deserved to be treated with patience and respect throughout that process.
We will continue showing up for this community because service is central to our mission. In return, we ask that our staff and volunteers be treated with the same kindness and dignity they strive to show every person they serve.
Thank you to Church of the Highlands, our staff, every volunteer, our donors, and the many families who showed patience, gratitude, and grace. Together, we made a meaningful difference for 263 pets and their families, and that is something worth celebrating. ❤️
