In observance of America's 250th Independence Day, we wanted to share a few images of the American flag courtesy of the University Archives.
Slide 1: Hand-crocheted U.S. flag made by Mrs. Harry Haff, Jr. of Seaford, New York, presented to John Glenn following his Friendship 7 space flight in 1962. John Glenn orbited the Earth three times, becoming the first American to achieve orbital flight and restoring U.S. confidence in the Space Race.
Slide 2: In 1960, Antarctic explorers at Byrd Station celebrated Independence Day with a delicious cake. The station conducted important research and served as a base camp for the first U.S. surface party to successfully travel to the South Pole by ice in 1960–1961.
Slide 3: The Byrd Station hosts a flag raising ceremony August 26th, 1960. They hosted these ceremonies during significant moments in the station. These moment include Independence Day, speeches given by Admiral Byrd and the first sunrise in 1970 after four months of darkness.
