🌀 Understanding Heat Pump vs. Traditional HVAC — Key Terms to Know
Thinking about upgrading your home’s heating and cooling system? You’ll often hear terms like SEER2, HSPF, Dual Fuel, or Variable Speed. Here’s a quick guide to help you make sense of it all when comparing a Heat Pump and a Traditional Furnace + AC System.
🔑 Key Terms
1. SEER / SEER2 (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio)
Measures cooling efficiency. The higher the number, the more energy-efficient the system is in summer.
Typical range: 14–22 SEER2
2. HSPF / HSPF2 (Heating Seasonal Performance Factor)
Used for heat pumps — tells you how efficiently they heat your home.
Typical range: 8–10 HSPF2
3. AFUE (Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency)
Used for gas furnaces — shows how much of the fuel becomes usable heat.
Example: 95% AFUE = 95% of the gas turns into heat
4. Dual Fuel (Hybrid System)
A combo system: uses the heat pump for mild weather and gas furnace when it’s very cold. Best of both worlds for Ohio’s climate.
5. Variable Speed / Two-Stage Compressor
Refers to how the system adjusts its power.
Variable speed = quieter, more efficient, and keeps temperature steady.
Single stage = runs full blast or not at all.
6. Reversing Valve
The key component that allows a heat pump to switch between cooling and heating modes.
7. Backup or Emergency Heat
Used when it’s too cold for the heat pump to work efficiently — often electric resistance heat or a gas furnace.
⚖️ In Short
Heat Pump = Energy-efficient, all-electric system for both heating & cooling.
Traditional HVAC (Furnace + AC) = Separate gas furnace and AC system; stronger heat in very cold weather.
💡 Pro Tip: When comparing systems, focus on:
➡️ Efficiency ratings (SEER2, HSPF2, AFUE)
➡️ Operating cost in your local climate
➡️ Rebates or incentives for high-efficiency systems
