LETS TALK ABOUT IT YA'LL - QUALITY OF WELDS
Sanitary Welding Standards & Procedures
AWS (D18.1) and ASME (BPE) set the benchmark for sanitary welding, while the FDA enforces cleanliness to prevent bacterial growth.
Interior Weld Characteristics for high-purity tubing must meet these Standards:
Full Pe*******on: The weld must be 100% visible on the inside (ID) with zero crevices.
Uniformity: The bead width should be consistent with no "icicles" or sag.
Smoothness: Welds must be polished to a Ra (Roughness average) typically 15–20 micro-inches to prevent biofilm buildup.
Exterior Heat Tint & Corrosion Resistance is extremely important as well in order to maintain the integrity of stainless steel, you must control the "heat-affected zone" (HAZ) ensuring you dont allow your tubing to become over heated.
Color Profile: Aim for straw, gold, or light blue tints.
If the weld turns dark gray or black, you have "cooked" the metal. This indicates chromium depletion and heavy oxidation.
Carbon Migration: Excessive heat draws carbon to the surface.
All in all weld quality is extremely important to Cleveland Process Systems, its an essential skill set to maintain consistently throughout the entirety of a project and as far as im concerned, the entire lifespan of Cleveland Process Systems!
