Cougar Canyon Golf Club - Trinidad, CO.
Opened in 2007 and designed by the Nicklaus Design Group and Chris Cochran.
At 7,789 the golf course was very challenging, especially when the winds were sweeping off the mountains. The course was rated #5 on the Golfweek “Best Courses You Can Play” list in 2007. Adding to rave reviews from GOLF Magazine (“Top 10 You Can Play 2007”), and LINKS Magazine (“America’s Premier Properties” 2008-2009)
Cougar Canyon had very unique black sand bunkers and views of Fishers Peak from nearly every point on the course. Having played it several times before it closed in 2012, I can tell you it was a REALLY good golf course with several memorable holes.
But it was built in the wrong place at the wrong time, during the height of the golf depression of the early 2000’s. It was a destination course before destination courses were cool. Located 3 hours south of the Denver metro area, it was a tough sell to pull customers that far south.
The land has reverted to its natural state as it was before being a golf course, full of prairie grass and sage brush. Only now sitting in the shadow of the skeleton of what was supposed to be a community with lots of houses and a hotel. The golf course was intended to be the heart of the neighborhood.
You can no longer even view the remnants of the golf course as security onsite will chase away adventure seekers under the threat of trespassing.
