My client wasn't promoting the guys for how they led their crews.
He was promoting for survival.
He knew who he could count on to get the job done.
Finish the job on budget, time and with integrity - right?
He thought that was the only way.
The one's who made it and moved up?
They got more responsibility of course.
Soon the guys known for "getting it done" were overwhelmed.
There was a pattern of short-tempers.
More yelling. Cussing.
People quitting.
More dust kicked up as people sped off job sites.
Disconnected from their crew.
What my client didn't know at the time -

But he was brought up through the ranks the same way.
Decades of "promoting and praying".
Losing good people.
Losing jobs.
Tons of stress and no skills to cope.
A response he gave to me in the beginning of our time together was:
"We just can't find good people"
A question I started with that led to developing his front-line leaders:
"What do you think we could be missing in leading people?"
-------------------------------
Have you ever considered what would happen if we started developing people with the same intention we use to build jobsite safety?
- Safety for people.
- Safety for culture.
- Safety for integrity.
- Safety for well-being.
What do you think? ๐

When it comes to promoting people into leadership...
- "We've done it this way for years and it just works"
- "They've got so much experience in the field"
- "They get the job done"
- "If it ain't broken (completely) - don't fix it"
No.
For the sake of safety and time, I'm betting you'd fix the tire.
Invest the $500-600 dollars for the tire and guarantee it's at its best.

Yes.
And we believe them.
We look at what has always worked.
We hone in on experience.
We stick to policy.
We're "loyal".
Now I love loyalty, comfort and things that work.
I'm just wondering if we're a little too comfy...
If we're forgetting that experience, title and tenure don't = leadership.
Asking for a friend.
And for the future of your company.

Stop. Drop. & ROLE is stirring things up! Every month I will now showcase a guest interview with a fresh topic - a new perspective of leadership from an amazing author, advocate or simply great human.
Today's topic is something that every breathing person should understand more about...
In this episode I sit down with Rachel Radway, a certified coach, best selling author of "Perceptive", and expert in neurodivergent leadership. Rachel brings her deep experience working with high-achieving women who are wired a bit differently - often highly sensitive, sometimes overlooked.
Together, we explore what it means to lead as a neurodivergent person in todayโs workplace. From Rachelโs personal story of burnout and transformation in rural Peru to the ways neurodivergence shapes boundaries, problem-solving, and emotional resilience - this conversation is packed with insight and heart.
Youโll hear honest dialogue around avoiding labels, honoring differences, and recognizing the hidden signs of burnout - especially for those whoโve been told theyโre โtoo muchโ, "weird" or โtoo different.โ Rachel also offers resources for those curious about masking, hormonal impacts on brain function, and how to lead from a place of self-love and strength.
Rachel also talks about what it's like to age as a neurodivergent woman, how it impacts things like hormones and living authentically in a space that is surrounded by self-love.
If youโve ever felt out of step with the typical leadership mold, this episode is your reminder that there's nothing wrong with your wiring - it might just be your superpower.

Coaching in construction and manufacturing has massive impacts on your mid-level managers and their teams.
It can change your entire organization if you're willing to go there.
It's tough because so many people are stagnant today with fear.
Fear of losing their jobs.
Fear of speaking up.
Fear of changing.
What I've found is that rather than talking things through in-house, the real conversations are being had with external coaches. The magic is happening when people are able to step UP and OUT of their lane and gain clarity - outside of the noise. Outside of the fear.
Into the reality of what you've outgrown.
What's no longer serving you.
With permission to GROW.
When I worked in-house, the conversations were never truly 100% authentic. People still held back. People still didn't trust completely. Fear ruled.
Here's to my guy in the field who sent this note to me - and to all the others out there who wish they had someone to support and collaborate with.
