Cienfuegos, Cuba, known as La Perla del Sur (The Pearl of the South), is a coastal city founded in 1819 by French settlers from Louisiana and Haiti.

While Cuba was a Spanish colony, Spain allowed French immigrants to settle in the area to help develop agriculture and trade.

The French influence is seen in Cienfuegos’ elegant architecture, wide boulevards, and orderly city layout—unusual for Spanish colonial towns. The settlers brought sugarcane expertise, which helped grow the local economy.

So, while Cienfuegos was never a formal French colony, it has strong French roots due to this planned immigration and cultural influence.
