Anywho, we don't normally do restorations or anything like that, but when Shirley Clark at Squirrel Finds (who can be found at The Heirloom Haus) calls, I've got to see what interesting thing she magically procured.

My scrap pile starts small, and suddenly it's a chaotic mountain of offcuts and screw ups taking over the entire shop.

Ugh. This was so stupid. Only AFTER doing all this for beam one did I think about it.

Block and beam is supposed to be close, not exact. The old timers used to shim the beams above the blocks to get them level. As long as the blocks were secure under the beams and not too far away from the bottom of the beam, you're golden. You can sometimes find the old oak shims on buildings with this type of construction.

Or, conversely, you might also see a mortar bed between the blocks and beams. If you go crawl around Barrington Living History Homesite, you will see the blocks (rocks) stacked and mortared under the beams holding up a whole two story home that was built in 1840. Yeah...I'm kinda known out there. Ben Baumgartner is amazing. You should go see him. He's probably sweating in the old barn with the oxen.

I'm gunna shim them, bottle jack it, and then mortar these bad boys in. 1840s engineering with modern high strength mortar...I might never have to re-level this house in my lifetime.

Six for the mind, thirty to prime

Six minutes - wake up call by. Reveille optional. I then like to read something by Marcus Aurelius, woodworking companion, or other sources.

Thirty to prime - the triple S. Coffee, two eggs scrambled, feet in boots, sunrise on the horizon hitting me in the face.

This is more or less my routine in the mornings born out of necessity from years of neglecting my mental health and substance abuse to self medicate. Go see a professional, get into a group, nail down a routine, seek help, get an accountability partner.
And SIX THREE ZERO EVERY DAY
