If you ever hear a loud metal on metal shrieking noise coming from one wheel, don't assume the worst. Sometimes the problem is much simpler than it sounds.

This week's video is a perfect example. The noise was caused by the brake backing plate lightly rubbing against the edge of the brake rotor. The backing plate is designed to help protect the brakes from road debris, but it can get bent from road hazards, rust, or even during previous brake repairs. Just a small amount of contact can create an awful sound that turns heads.

The good news is this is often a quick fix. The important part is making sure the noise is diagnosed correctly, because similar sounds can also come from worn brake pads, damaged rotors, or failing wheel bearings.

If your vehicle starts making an unusual noise, don't ignore it. Catching the problem early can help prevent unnecessary repairs and give you peace of mind.
