We all love the ArcGIS Cleveland Historic maps and were also just as dismayed to see that it's been retired.

This link still works as of right now, and while it's clunky, it does have the information.

Montage: A Filmed History of the 60s and 70s with a Cleveland Perspective 10/28/2025

https://library.csuohio.edu/montage/
Many years ago, Cleveland State digitized and created a web site featuring 50-some episodes of Montage, a television documentary program that aired in Cleveland on WKYC-TV, NBC from 1965 to 1978. This dramatic and professional series focused on Cleveland and Cuyahoga County, emphasizing local history, personalities, and the contribution of Northeastern Ohio to the world.

Earlier this year, with the approval of donor Dennis Goulden, the physical collection - all extant 16mm film elements and Nagra reel-to-reel recordings used to compile the original 350 Montage documentaries - was transferred to Cleveland Public Library (CPL) to become a part of the CPL Center for Media's Northeast Ohio Broadcast Archives initiative (NEOBA).

It's obviously in good hands: Cleveland Public Library is one of two libraries in the United States selected by the Library of Congress to be a part of its prestigious, grant-funded LOCal digital initiative, led by Laurie Allen, Chief of Digital Innovation Division/Library of Congress Labs. The NEOBA collections will be a key component of this initiative.

Cleveland Public Library is now looking for candidates for a brand new position to manage this amazing collection:

Cleveland Public Library seeks an experienced, highly motivated individual to build and manage --from the ground up-- a dynamic moving image archive documenting Cleveland history.
The collections that form the foundation of this initiative include the Northeast Ohio Broadcast Archives (NEOBA) and the Dennis Goulden Montage Documentary Collection (Montage). These collections are comprised of more than 250,000+ original media elements produced by Cleveland television stations WKYC (NBC) and WEWS (ABC) and radio station WGAR.

The media elements date from the 1940s to about 1990. Formats include 120,000+ coreless 16mm news film clips/segments, 132,000+ videotape clips/segments (mostly U-matic & DVCPro, with some 2-inch, 1-inch, VHS, MII, MiniDV, and Beta), 5,000+ audio clips/interviews on ¼" audio reels, and a small collection of glass phonodisc radio transcriptions from the 1940s. The collection is expected to expand over time to include material from additional Cleveland television and radio stations, regional filmmakers, and home films & videos.

Montage was a television documentary program that aired in Cleveland on WKYC (NBC) from 1965 to 1978. The 350+ episodes of this Cleveland-centric series were shot exclusively on 16mm film stock. Documentarian Dennis Goulden (b. 1935) won more than 200 awards, including numerous Emmys, for his insightful productions focused on the critical issues of the day, including the Vietnam War, LGBTQ topics, education, pollution, drugs, and crime. Accompanying this collection is an extensive, invaluable, and unexplored archive of Montage outtake material (16mm and ¼" audio reels).

The candidate selected for this permanent, full-time position will guide the planning of physical space, ordering of equipment, and hiring of a team of diverse professionals to inventory, digitize, catalog, and provide access to a vast archive of local news/documentary film and video.

Compensation starting salary range is $90,000 to $105,000 and will be based on qualifications and professional background. The Library provides 22 vacation days annually, sick & personal time, generous medical & dental coverage, life insurance, OPERS retirement benefits, and participation in Ohio Deferred Compensation.
