PowerSport Institute

Ohio Technical College's PowerSport Institute (PSI) in Cleveland is excited to enhance their American V-Twin program. With some recent additions of training aids including H-D® Motorcycles, H-D® Motors, and other equipment, PSI will now be training their students on Harley-Davidson® products. We will be supporting them with internships and also meeting with the students in the classroom to speak about the “role of a Professional H-D® Technician”.

Don’t let people convince you that the PowerSport industry doesn’t need technicians – because they do. OTC PowerSport graduate, Johnnie Powers PSS-62/2019, was immediately called back and pursued by Adrenaline Cycles in London, KY - a dealership 40-minutes from his hometown days after he applied. “They specialize in Can-Am, which is a brand I’m not familiar with,” says Powers. “They were willing to take a chance on me for two reasons. Good, reliable technicians are difficult to find and I had training and experience with similar brands plus a proven track record of finishing what I started.” Powers graduated from OTC’s PowerSport program in June 2019 specializing in Kawasaki and Yamaha, earning his Bronze level certifications with those brands as well as Artic Cat CatMaster in snowmobile and ATV, Polaris MSD and 75-hours of Dynojet. He made Honor Roll and only missed a handful of training days. Starting in his new role as a service technician, Powers will need to maintain his discipline and dedication while learning a new brand as well as establishing himself as a professional. His advice to current students is to put forth the effort to earn industry certifications as those industry certs will pay-off for you in the long run.

PSI graduate Mitch Linke is happy working for high school friend, John Gordon at Gordon’s Garage in Eastlake. Both Gordon and Linke attended Wickliffe High School and met in Tony Rozman’s Automotive class at Euclid High School. Both graduated from OTC (Gordon from Auto-diesel and Linke from the PowerSport program). Gordon continued a business he started at age 16 after his OTC graduation and Linke went to work for a local Harley Davidson dealership. After four years Linke was thinking of opening his own shop when he saw a post on facebook from Gordon looking for an experienced motorcycle technician. Linke figured this was his sign to move forward and accepted the position with Gordon’s Garage. Linke’s solid customer service skills are important now that he has direct customer contact with the bike and powersport equipment owners. He enjoys providing great service for a fair price and the flexibility that working for a small business can provide.
