Clients tell us that the IRS Form 1023 is…well…confusing. Here are some tips to help navigate the application process:

1-READ THE INSTRUCTIONS
If you are still confused after reading the instructions, please do not feel that you are inadequate in any way. It can most certainly be confusing. We recommend completing one section at a time and only reading the instructions for the section that you are working on. If you are still confused or have questions, seek an experienced nonprofit professional.

2-Compile your information
Once you know the questions you can prepare your answers. Throughout this application you will need to refer to organizational documents and personal information of people other than yourself. It will help you greatly to gather the info ahead of time.

3-Complete a Rough Draft
Completing a rough draft of the application can allow you to see all the pages of the application at once. This step is especially helpful to those who prefer paper to the blue light or scrolling movement of electronic screens. This step can assist in finding errors before submitting the final application.
