Spending three days in a forest environment significantly boosts natural killer (NK) cell activity, primarily through the inhalation of phytoncides, which are antimicrobial volatile organic compounds released by trees like pines, cedars, and oaks to protect themselves from insects and disease. When humans spend prolonged time in a dense forest—a practice known as shinrin-yoku or “forest bathing”—they breathe in these airborne plant chemicals, including alpha-pinene and limonene.
Landmark research pioneered by Dr. Qing Li from Nippon Medical School demonstrates that inhaling phytoncides directly stimulates the human immune system. This chemical exposure increases the intracellular levels of specific anti-cancer proteins within lymphocytes, such as perforin, granzymes, and Granulysin, which are the biological tools NK cells use to puncture and destroy abnormal or tumor cells.
Beyond the direct chemical stimulation from trees, a three-day forest retreat heavily fortifies immunity by drastically reducing chronic stress. Modern urban living continuously triggers the sympathetic nervous system (fight-or-flight), creating an excess of stress hormones like cortisol and adrenaline that actively suppresses white blood cell function.
Immersive nature therapy shifts the body into a parasympathetic-dominant (rest-and-digest), lowering heart rates, stabilizing blood pressure and significantly reducing these circulating stress hormones. Because cortisol and adrenaline are suppressed, the body’s natural defenses can recover and thrive.

Hello my dear friends,
Every thought, feeling and action, no matter what it is, has a direct effect on the entire Universe. Because we are ALL CONNECTED, we are all part of the Universal Energy
ALL THINGS ARE INTERCONNECTED. You are not just a physical being. You are a mental, an emotional, and a spiritual being. These are all interconnected. Often when we experience illness, we have separated out these aspects of our whole self. If you focus on only one aspect at a time, your results will be very limited. At Spring Forest Qigong we teach our students...
Although, it is important to understand and focus on all aspects of our being, when we look at healing ourselves, we don’t need to understand these principles to experience the benefits of SFQ practice.
Once we open ourselves up to the universe, the universal energy is with us and gives our body whatever kind of energy it needs and automatically returns to the universe what it does not need.
Many Blessings,
Chunyi Lin
