I bought this book for my 8 year old grandson. Looking through it, I realized this would actually be good for ANY beginner. It covers the basics very well and also includes some strategies. Highly recommended for young people or beginners of any age.
(I earn nothing from the sale of this book. I just like it.)

I also like the Chess (dot com) app. It's a tad pricey but you can play on your phone. Solve puzzles, play bots, play friends... lots of options.
