The WaterRipper Phenomena is a hand sized sports water bag that uses patented water absorbing, low impact technology. In spite of being out marketed by the Waboba Ball its major competitor, and because of its unique properties and playability, it continues to garner critical acclaim and product reviews from national publications, sports groups, media outlets on TV, newspapers, family toy magazines and product reviewers. The Big Splash! The water absorbing and floating principles of this kid’s toy was discovered in Kauai Hawaii in 1998 when a leather Hacky Sack™ ended up in the surf. It barely floated and to our delight for days, it skipped on the water surface straight and like a rock when hurdled in any direction. I ordered the Hacky Sack™ Patent from the USTPO and reverse engineered the contents trying to understand the material components, the physics and the phenomena of the discovery. Because the Hacky Sack patent was still active and the watertoy market was small at the time, I was talked out of approaching Wham-o with the discovery. In July of 2009 I found the world’s leading waterball Waboba™ Ball on a store shelf at Bird in Hand in Chico, CA. I bought it, took it on vacation and within minutes of playing Surf Catch discovered the bag design from 1998 was superior to the ball in the ability for players particularly kids to control, catch and throw the water toy on the water surface. This observation sparked continued R&D of the toy and within a month I met with Wham-o in Emeryville, CA to notify them of this innovation. Although they passed on partnering, they encouraged continued R&D and recommended strong patent protected contents. RipperBall.com Sports then pursued patent and trademark protections for toy and the start-up company in Fall of 2009.
