WeatherCast Central (or WCC) is a new website that I have launched in September 2016 with the goal of providing comprehensive weather information. The site will be handling storm systems that impact the Northeast and Midwest regions of the United States. What you will be seeing are easy to understand maps, severe and winter weather alerts, forecasts extending up to 10 days, and useful blog posts t

***WINTER WEATHER ALERT***

"Like WeatherCast Central for the latest!"

Significant snow is starting to appear likely across the Great Lakes and Northeast region.

A shortwave trough will eject from the northwestern United States tonight bringing widespread precipitation into the forecast area later tomorrow morning.

As we move into Sunday, an additional, stronger through will start to develop and bring heavier totals with a deepening area of low pressure.

Thanks to the fact that we will be dealing with two separate systems, some locations could end up seeing around 30 hours of continuous snowfall. Any organized bands of snow that develop could drop significant amounts.

Current models are suggesting snowfall totals of up to 14 inches possible from northern Iowa into Michigan.

While these remain a little on the high side compared to model averages, these amounts are not something that can be ruled out due to the duration of the storm.

However, I expect the averages in the to remain around 10 inches across the lower Great Lakes region. Locally higher totals of 15" cannot be ruled out.

All of the dark red outlines are in higher elevations. Cooler temperatures are likely which will contribute to better precipitation to snow ratios. For this reason, 15 inches or more appears possible.

In extreme southeastern New York into Maine, totals of 14+ are possible, especially in mountainous areas.

Elsewhere, from the Upper Plains into New England, snow amounts will range from 1-9 inches.

Further south, scattered rain showers are possible. Organized rain is likely in Tennessee into extreme southern New England. A few instances of lightning cannot be ruled out.

We’re also looking at mixed precipitation near the rain/snow line. Make sure to use caution while driving if any ice starts to develop.

***Forecast notes…***

•There is an area of uncertainty in central Ohio and Pennsylvania; chances still exist for snow totals to exceed the current forecast

•Model guidance becomes more questionable as the snow moves into the Northeast; track changes and storm strength are very possible

•Extreme southern areas of the pink and purple outline can still shift either north or west, but nothing major is anticipated

I understand that the map is small. It’s difficult to make something readable when trying to cover half of the US!

If you need me to enlarge a portion of the map, then feel free to leave a comment below with your city. :)

A strong line of thunderstorms is making its way into Indiana. As of now, the storms have struggled to reach severe limits due to a lack of instability.

There may still be just enough shear to allow for a brief isolated, weak tornado risk with strong wind gusts, but the risk remains low.

Heavy Snowfall Possible for New York and New England 10/21/2016

Are you ready for snow?

The chance for heavy snowfall has increased for portions of upper New York into western Maine.

A strong low pressure system is currently pressing through the region which will pull in cold air from Canada. These upcoming cold temperatures should be just enough to allow for widespread accumulating snowfall.
