Most people were running away.
Father Mychal Judge ran toward the towers.
September 11, 2001.
Smoke poured from the World Trade Center. Thousands of people were trying to escape. Firefighters rushed inside knowing many would never return.
Father Mychal Judge went with them.
As chaplain of the New York City Fire Department, he had spent years serving those who faced danger every day. Firefighters knew him. Trusted him. Loved him.
That morning, he followed them into chaos.
Judge moved among the injured and frightened, offering prayers and comfort wherever he could. Witnesses recalled him ministering to first responders and civilians as the disaster unfolded around him.
Then tragedy struck again.
As emergency crews worked near the North Tower command post, debris from the collapsing South Tower crashed into the area.
Father Judge was k!LLed instantly.
He was 68 years old.
The image that followed became one of the most powerful photographs from September 11. Firefighters and rescuers carried his body from the rubble, creating a scene many compared to a modern-day Pietà.
But his story did not begin on 9/11.
For decades, he had devoted his life to helping people others often ignored. He worked with the homeless, recovering addicts, and those suffering from HIV/AIDS during some of the darkest years of the epidemic.
On September 11, he died exactly as he lived.
Serving others.
Comforting the frightened.
Standing beside people in their hardest moments.
Most people ran from danger.
Father Mychal Judge walked straight into it.
