“We’re seeing it a lot recently,” Ruiz said. “Landlords do things to make tenants’ life hell. The tenants get annoyed and they self-evict.”
The notices worked to clear about half the building.

Back in June, Della, a tenant living in Englewood, reached out to CTM after her landlord broke into her apartment, threw her belongings into the alley, and illegally changed her locks. He threw away TVs, rugs, clothes—and also her late son’s ashes.
With CTM’s help, she was able to get back into her apartment, and afterwards we launched a campaign to get Della compensation for what she’s owed. Della organized her friends and family, and together with a group of CTM organizers we went to her landlord and delivered her demands.
When her landlord refused to negotiate, Della and CTM organizers began to canvass the landlord’s other properties across the south and west side to get tenants to stand together against landlord abuse and neglect. Now the movement’s grown—in early August, Della and tenants from buildings across the city had their first tenant association meeting. Although Della’s campaign continues, it’s no longer hers alone.
Through her fight, she’s led tenants across the city to start building the kind of powerful longterm organizations through which tenants can fight back and defend themselves.
