Govan and Mike Stern. I study and play so many different genres because my goal is to put them all together in one single thing, which will be my own way of making music. I’m convinced that the more you know, the more music knowledge and vocabulary you have, the farthest you get in terms of improvising and composing. I'm a music nerd, but in the simplest way. To me, playing 5 powerful notes with the right feeling is more important than showing off, so in my playing I try to express even complex ideas but with the right simplest feeling. Music has always driven me through my life experience. Each song that I hear reminds me of a moment that I've lived or serves as perfect soundtrack to the present. I find something that somehow matches with my life in every single tune, whether there are lyrics or not. Music to me is the best way that people have to express their feelings and share them with others. It’s a cliché, everyone loves music because it drives your life and it allows you to express and share yourself, but the great thing is that everyone somehow manages to express his/herself in his/her own way and, if you pay attention, you can hear the little differences that make each musician unique. One great thing that keeps my passion for music so strong is that there is always something more to say in music, some unexplored field, some weird chord, harmonization or phrasing to be revealed. I work with music because I want to know what’s next, what chord, harmonization or phrasing has never been played before. What other way of saying I love you has not been discovered yet. Music is love, community, sharing, happiness, fun, and nothing is more important than love, community, sharing, happiness and fun--music, to say it in one word--to me. My style is rock-sounding, but I try to include jazzy chords and scales in my playing. I'm working to develop my skills that way, taking jazz and rocking it, or taking rock and giving it an interesting jazzy foundation.
