Born just across the Michigan border in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, Tony Esposito grew up in a region where hockey was a way of life. His rise began at Michigan Tech, where he emerged as a standout goaltender in the 1960s. During his collegiate career, he became a three-time First Team All-American and backstopped the Huskies to the 1965 NCAA Championship, earning a reputation as one of the nation’s most reliable netminders.

Esposito turned professional in 1967 with the Vancouver Canucks, then made his NHL debut two years later with the Montreal Canadiens at age 25. His breakout came after joining the Chicago Blackhawks, where he captured both the Calder Trophy and the Vezina Trophy in 1970, while also finishing as runner-up for the Hart Trophy. Throughout the 1970s, he remained one of the league’s dominant goaltenders and went on to win two more Vezina trophies. The Blackhawks honoured him by retiring number 35.

After his playing days, Esposito moved into leadership roles, serving as general manager of the Pittsburgh Penguins and later as chief scout for the Tampa Bay Lightning. He passed away in 2021, leaving a lasting legacy in both Canadian and NHL history.
