A lot can happen in 12 years! In 2014, Dean and I worked together as a team of two. We wore all the hats and tackled cases together from our office at 180 N. LaSalle (in the company of many other wonderful solo and small firm attorneys).
I learned constantly from Dean in my first years as an associate. I heard him on the phone telling clients honest and direct answers about their cases— including telling them they were better off saving their money rather than giving it to us to fight a losing claim. I would later hear those individuals call back to say they had just referred cases our way because they appreciated the honesty.
We were in court daily, when the Daley Center was a true social scene, with attorneys wheeling, dealing and chatting in between their many status calls. My first week on the job, I (broke and clueless) carried my law school backpack to court. The next day, Dean without comment left a beautiful briefcase on my desk. I still have it.
We had wild trials, big wins, and negotiated thousands of divorce settlements. And over time, we grew. Our team of two is now a team of sixteen.
Through all of the growth, our values have remained the same: providing excellent legal guidance, being responsive and easy to work with (for our clients and our opposing counsel) and helping people find a path forward through divorce while minimizing emotional and financial stress.

I want to make mediation even more accessible and efficient.
I have been a divorce attorney for 13 years and divorce mediator for 5. The biggest reason I love mediation (and there are many) is how much money it saves my clients. Instead of playing a game of telephone from lawyer to client to lawyer etc. you’re having a real time guided conversation and figuring things out.
We’re now offering parenting plan mediations that start with a guided online process that each parent participates in to:
a) prepare them for mediation
b) organize information
c) identify areas of agreement

You know what costs you nothing and can gain you a ton in a divorce mediation? When your spouse vents about something painful to them and instead of trying to argue against it, you listen and respond with “wow, I never realized how hard that was for you.”
I have seen people fighting tooth and nail over something who will DROP an issue once their core feeling is acknowledged and heard by their spouse.
Can this work for every issue? Of course not. But it’s a powerful tool.
In my practice, we mediate cases and support clients working with mediators with a very careful and strategic approach.

Two bonus tips: A “premarital retirement statement” is the statement showing the balance of your retirement account right before you got married. In many states, you can carve that our as your separate property. Plus ask for the growth on that account!
If you are concerned your ex may be using your name and information to open up credit cards or other debt, you can freeze your credit! Just google “freeze credit”

I have been a divorce attorney for 13 years… and I know when I don’t have the answer my client needs.
Here are some things I am not:
-tax professional
-therapist
-mortgage specialist
-home appraiser
-business valuation expert
-pension valuator
I know enough about all of these areas to know when we need to call in an expert.
You might be thinking, why would I hire a lawyer if they can’t do all this stuff for me? Won’t that be expensive?
But picture this… would you go to your GP/regular doctor if you needed surgery? Or to have a root canal. No way. You’d get a referral.
A really good divorce lawyer will guide you through the process. In addition to handling the legal issues, they will project manage the divorce and provide excellent referrals. Judges are human. In my 13 years as a divorce lawyer, I will say, most judges are trying to do the right thing and make reasonable rulings.
But it is always a roll of the dice when you bring a parenting issue to a judge. They’re not omnipotent. They’re just people. And even when they really care they are not going to have all of the facts and context that you do.
Typically neither party is quite happy with the judge’s ruling on major parenting issues. And sometimes the courts really go off the rails.
There are times when people need to go to court. When there’s a safety issue, for example. But if there is a way that you can stay out of court and keep control over your situation rather than ceding all control to the judge, do it.
A great lawyer can help you approach your case strategically, swiftly and realistically. And can help you use tools to stay out of court like smart negotiation, planning, mediation and more.
