Did a whole project on Abolitionist Sojourner Truth in 5th grade. I became obsessed with her that I had my mom take me to her grave site to pay my respects in Battle Creek, MI.

Sojourner Truth born Isabella Baumfree. A native speaker of Dutch from Ulster County, New York. Sold away from her parents. Would endure many severe beaters from her slave owner because of the language barrier. She escaped slavery in 1826 with her daughter. She changed her name in 1846, because she felt called to travel and speak truth about the needing of change.

Also, There are 2 versions of the speech. The popular ‘Ain’t I a Woman’ Speech was first published by Frances Gage in 1863, 12 years after the speech itself. Another version was published a month after the speech was given in the Anti-Slavery Bugle by Rev. Marius Robinson. In Robinson’s Version the phrase ‘Ain’t I a Woman’ is not present.

Her full story is powerful. Her Harriet were some dope women. With 2 different approaches to fighting the system for equality, civil rights and the end to slavery.

I am going to do the other version! Did this one because this was the one I read in elementary. Sometimes you do stuff, just for the lil’ you ❤️.
