Juneteenth or “Freedom Day” celebrates the end of slavery in the United States. The emancipation proclamation signed by Abraham Lincoln in 1863 declared that “all persons held as slaves shall be then, thenceforward, and forever free.” However, freedom did not come for all enslaved people until June 19 1865 when 2,000 Union troops arrived in Galveston Bay, Texas to uphold the executive order. We honor the lives lost and celebrate freedom from slavery. On this day of celebration we encourage you to further your knowledge of black history and honor the black community. We are sharing some events in each of our cities to celebrate!
