Maggie Daley, who dedicated herself to children’s issues and the arts while also zealously guarding her family’s privacy during 22 years as Chicago’s First Lady, died a little after 6 p.m. tonight, more than nine years after she was diagnosed with breast cancer. She was 68.

Mrs. Daley was surrounded by her husband and family members at her home, according to Jacquelyn Heard, a family friend and the former mayor's spokeswoman.

In a Statement released by Mayor Rahm Emanuel, "Chicago has lost a warm and
gracious First Lady who contributed immeasurably to our city. While
Mayor Daley served as the head of this city, Maggie was its heart."

Al-Qaeda says No. 2 al-Zawahri succeeds bin Laden as leader

Al-Qaeda’s longtime No. 2 leader, a doctor from a prominent Egyptian family who worked with Osama bin Laden for decades, has succeeded the slain terrorist as head of the global network, the group said Thursday.

Ayman al-Zawahri, who turns 60 on Sunday, has long brought ideological fire, tactics and organizational skills to al-Qaeda.

The surgeon by training was first behind the use of the su***de bombings and independent terror cells that have become the network’s trademarks.
