Modern medicine has come a long way in the past decades and is now able to help people much better than ever before. Yet, even now in the 21st century, there are still people who suffer from easily preventable illness and disease. The United Nations has a list of 8 goals to be accomplished by the end of the century. One of these goals is access to basic health care. Most people believe this to be
a problem that only affects developing countries; however, the truth is that there are still many people in the U.S. that suffer from these problems and are overlooked because of race, ethnicity, and socioeconomic status. The Agency of Healthcare Research and Quality stated that, in 2008, 10% of people weren't able to get proper health care. population, you have 32,248,000 people without the benefit of modern medicine. Unfortunately, although the federal government launches programs to help these people, they usually only provide insurance. These programs do not account for lack of locality; thus, we end up with large sectors of the Chicago area where citizens are not able to access basic healthcare. The purpose of the HALOS Project is to break down the barrier that blocks people of different backgrounds and socioeconomic status from receiving health care by supplying them with connections to medical specialists, informing citizens of important personal health updates, and giving them access to resources and medical professionals through clinics in an effort to improve the overall health of Chicago citizens and promote the equality of healthcare.
