This piece is part of a larger project entitled Shotor (meaning camel in Farsi) inspired by the Persian idiom Kineh Shotori meaning ‘to hold a grudge like a camel.’

“I identify as a camel. While camels have a powerful bite, immense weight, and have killed people, they are not belligerent, murderous, or predatory. I am emotive and meticulous, and I remember everything that affects my heart.

I was an eccentric person interested in makeup, clothing, and art, all things my country, the government and culture strongly rejected, and their beliefs only intensified my feelings of heartbreak and isolation. The camel comes to signify an evil version of myself who takes revenge on those who have wronged her.

The Eastern Evil Ava in consideration of my relationship to Western Civilization. Using the repetitive creation of camels for this project, I ask myself “Am I becoming more like a camel, or is a camel becoming more me?” Through these animals, I playfully confront those who have wronged me and occupy my mind.”
