PE Activity in Auto Collision Repair Shops: Private equity continues to consolidate a variety of historically fragmented industries, with the auto collision repair market being a prominent example. Recently, this sector has attracted financial sponsors due to its non-discretionary demand, recession-resilient fundamentals, and large addressable market. As a result, the top 12 PE-backed multi-shop operators (MSOs) have expanded from roughly 1,900 shops under ownership in 2019 to more than 3,800 in 2024. Notably, Caliber Collision has added almost 300 shops alone in the past two years ahead of its confidentially filed IPO.

Sponsors are executing a proven value-creation strategy focused on centralizing back-office operations, leveraging procurement synergies, and achieving operating leverage through scale. As consolidation accelerates and aging independent owners seek exit opportunities, insurers, OEMs, and parts suppliers must adapt to a landscape increasingly led by scaled MSOs with greater bargaining power, standardized processes, and integrated supply chains.

RCG will continue to track the expansion of PE-led roll-ups across other fragmented markets to assess how consolidation reshapes value creation and ecosystem dynamics.
