Sometimes children repeat questions because they forgot the answer.
But often, repeated questioning is about regulation through reassurance.
When children feel uncertain, anxious, or dysregulated, their brains seek predictability.
The repeated question isn’t always about getting new information.
It can be an attempt to reduce internal uncertainty.
That’s why simply repeating the answer sometimes doesn’t help.
What helps more is responding to the need underneath:
“I’ve already answered that, and it sounds like your brain is needing extra reassurance right now.”
Then support predictability through:
visual cues
clear time markers
consistent routines
co-regulation
Repeated questions can be a window into what a child’s nervous system is struggling to hold.
Not defiance.
Not manipulation.
Often uncertainty.
Does your child have a question they repeat when they’re feeling unsettled?
