64 years ago today, my parents were married. Details I know...

Ceremony was at the old Holy Cross Greek Orthodox Church in Summit and Luncheon reception was at the Bunker Hill Country Club in the Norwood Park neighborhood of Chicago. Unfortunately this is the only photo I have of their wedding. 😢But I do actually have their bride and groom from their four layer buttercream tiered with pillars wedding cake, which surprisingly was not at the top but it’s in the middle of their tiered cake. They had a wedding bell cake topper on the top tier. Mom carried white carnations (?) with a cattleya orchid that turned into a corsage for the reception. I guess that was a “trend” then. Her wedding dress was was knee length, and made by the neighbor across the street on the corner of Neenah Avenue, Wilma. She borrowed her Juliet cap and veil from someone, I don’t recall who. My dad wore a stephanotis boutonniere. He really never wore his wedding ring, after this day because he was not a jewelry person. Actually it was missing for a very long time and then was found in the house. I actually have it and wear it with grandpa Frank Wagner’s Wedding ring on the same finger. For those of you who don’t know, Mom was Handicapped. She walked with the brace. And actually had a white shoe attached to her brace for the wedding. Since they both didn’t dance, (the reason my Dad asked her out to go to a dance on their first date), they didn’t have any music I don’t think. Their white folded wedding invitations had Embossed bride and groom. Only a portion of their guest list were invited to the reception.

Two very funny stories I remember my mother telling me. My Aunt Martha was her maid of honor. On the way to the church, my aunt was driving her own car and was honking the horn all the way there. My mom said to grandpa “oh she must just be happy Her brother was finally getting married!” (My Dad was actually 46, and my Mom was 29, which was old for a woman to get married back in 1962 I think! ) No, she left her bouquet on the dining room table! And at the church, the stephana (Greek wedding crowns) were stapled into a box. No one could find a way to get them out until they got a knife from the kitchen downstairs. So because of these instances, I am make sure all the girls have their flowers when leaving the hotel or wherever they’re getting ready, and there is a staple remover in my emergency kit!

I miss them so much, but know they are with me every day. Happy Anniversary Audrey and John.
