The Hirohata Merc
There are customs... and then there are legends.
Built by Sam and George Barris for Bob Hirohata, the Hirohata Merc was widely regarded as one of the most influential custom cars ever created. Its graceful proportions, flowing body modifications, and timeless styling helped define the custom car movement and continue to inspire builders more than 70 years later.
We photographed this iconic 1951 Mercury tribute at the 2019 Grand National Roadster Show, while it was still owned by renowned customizer John D'Agostino.

The Emperor Still Reigns..
Built by Chuck Krikorian and completed by George Barris and Barris Kustoms, The Emperor captured the prestigious America's Most Beautiful Roadster (AMBR) award at the 1960 Grand National Roadster Show.
Powered by a 406ci Cadillac V8 topped with six Stromberg 97 carburetors, this iconic roadster blended innovative engineering with Barris' unmistakable custom styling. More than six decades later, it remains one of the most recognizable show rods ever created.
We were fortunate to see this legendary roadster on display during the Grand National Roadster Show years back, where it continues to inspire hot rodders and custom car enthusiasts alike.
