Fun facts about the Chicago River dye:
- The dye used to color the river green is a secret formula that is only known to a few members of the local plumbers union.

- The dye is actually orange before it's mixed with water, and it's completely safe for the environment and wildlife.

- It takes about 40 pounds of the dye to turn the river green, and the color lasts for days.

- The 60yr tradition was almost cancelled in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but the city found a way to dye the river green without crowds by doing it early in the morning and live streaming the event.

- The Chicago River isn't the only one that's dyed green for St. Patrick's Day - the White House fountain and the river in Savannah, Georgia also get the emerald treatment every year.
