Raymond Griffith Campsite

Thanks to Eagle Scout Sean Belenets from Scout Troop 139 for restocking the fire wood at the campsite!

Exciting News! Last night the Chester Township Town council officially named the project area “Raymond Griffith Campsite”! After almost a year of interviews and research we are thrilled with the decision. Ray was a Chester Township Resident who built his home with his wite Eileen and raised three children. He was a Korean War Army Veteran, who came back to Chester and lived a life of service for his community. As a Scoutmaster in Troop 139 he camped throughout our Township. He volunteered with Chester's American Legion Post 342 and the Morristown VFW and focused on helping Veterans returning from Vietnam, and later the conflicts in the Middle East. He also served on the Chester Parks Commission and worked with the Morris County Arboretum for 7 years. Ray set a high bar of service and is the epitome of an individual whom our parks and facilities should be named.

Troop 139 camps at the new site for the first time! A great weekend of training and troop planning. This year is going to be great!

Josh, assembled and erected the final portion of the project today. The 24’ flagpole, repurposed and graciously funded by Bernays Apgar-Larry Maysey American Legion Post 342, the Legion Riders, and the Sons of the American Legion. Just a few final touch ups, naming the site, and a ribbon cutting!

Thank you Troop 9 and Wood Family for the help this weekend! The fire ring is 95% complete the sanitation station has been assembled and ready to be bricked! It’s almost ready!

Ruby went onsite today to inspect the grass growth and overseed the project area! This weekend the continuation of the fire ring. Only 25 days until the first campers arrive.
