OTD in 1951, Willie Mays hit the first of his 660 Major League home runs, sixth all-time in baseball history.
Two years later, he spent the entire 1953 season in the U.S. Army, playing primarily for the Fort Eustis Wheels military baseball team in Virginia. Even though he wasn't playing for the Giants that season, he was still included as a key part of Topps' 1953 issue.
