The Citie of Henricus was born out of a need for survival, strategy, and strength. From its very inception, armed conflict and defense were woven into the fabric of daily life for the English settlers and the Indigenous Virginia Indians they encountered.
To survive on the frontier, the settlement relied heavily on its military readiness. From fortified palisades and watchtowers to the heavily armed soldiers guarding the perimeter, conflict shaped the history of this early colonial site.

Founded in 1611, the Citie of Henricus became the second successful English settlement in North Americaand a place of historic “firsts,” from the first English hospital to the first chartered college. It also stood at the crossroads of English and Powhatan cultures.
