Right now, Chesapeake Humane Society has an incredible group of small animals looking for homes, including rabbits, guinea pigs, parakeets, finches, and more!

Whether you're looking for a pair of chatty birds to brighten your mornings, a rabbit to lounge beside you while you read, or a guinea pig who gets excited every time the veggie drawer opens, we have a little someone waiting to meet you.

Our small animals may be... well... small, but they have just as much personality as their canine and feline friends.

Visit our shelter to meet them in person, or browse all of our adoptable pets online:

You might be surprised to discover your perfect match has feathers, floppy ears, or tiny little squeaks. 🐰🐹🐦

Last week, we shared that our shelter refrigerator had finally given up after years of faithful service.

As always, this community showed up.

A huge thank you to Rob Nicholson and East Coast Appliance for donating a replacement refrigerator for our shelter. Not only did Rob answer the call for help, he went above and beyond by also providing an updated washer and dryer for our clinic.

When we make posts asking for support, we're often focused on an immediate need. What we don't always get to show is the incredible response that follows. Time and time again, our community reminds us that we are not doing this work alone.

And to everyone who shared, donated, tagged a friend, or helped spread the word: thank you. We are grateful for all of you.

P.S. - This week's "in-kind donation need of the week" is toilet paper. Unlike refrigerators, toilet paper has an alarmingly high turnover rate and absolutely refuses to stick around long-term. Donations can be dropped off at either or shelter or clinic location, or shipped directly via Amazon.

Let's talk about Nessie.

Nessie has been at CHS for far too long, and we think part of the reason is that she's easy to overlook.

She isn't the dog who runs up to every new person looking for attention. She doesn't instantly charm visitors with kisses and tail wags. In fact, if we're being honest, people aren't really her thing.

Dogs are.

Nessie is a dog's dog. More than anything, she wants a canine companion. Another dog gives her confidence, helps her feel safe, and shows her how to navigate the world. When she's with a dog friend, you can see her relax. She runs. She plays. She chases tennis balls. She stretches out in the sunshine. She gets to just be a dog.

We know Nessie won't be the right fit for every family. But we also know there's someone out there whose dog is looking for a best friend.

At just 2 years old, Nessie has so much life ahead of her. She needs a patient home that will let her settle in at her own pace and another confident dog to help her along the way. We truly believe that in the right environment, Nessie will continue to blossom.

If you or someone you know has a friendly dog who could use a sidekick, please come meet Nessie.

She's been waiting long enough.

Meet Zinger.

Zinger is a 5-year-old beagle mix with short legs, a big personality, and, well... a few extra pounds. Okay, more than a few.

At CHS, we firmly believe every body is a beach body. That said, Zinger's beach body could probably benefit from a few more laps around the shoreline.

If you've ever wanted a pot-bellied piglet but wished it would stay puppy dog-sized forever, have we got the guy for you. Zinger bears a striking resemblance to Babe, complete with a round belly, determined attitude, and the confidence of an animal that has never once questioned whether he should have that extra snack.

Despite carrying around some extra baggage, Zinger still loves to zip around the yard and play fetch. His little legs get moving, his ears start flapping, and suddenly you're watching what can only be described as athletic optimism in action.

He's a people-loving guy and he can be dog selective, but he tends to do much better once he's out of the kennel and able to strut his stuff.

Zinger wasn't always this round, and with the right family, regular exercise, and a few fewer treats, we know he'll be feeling his best in no time.

Float like a butterfly. Zing like a porky little puppy.

Come meet Zinger. We promise he's even more charming in person.
