PSA: Your visual identity ≠ your brand identity!

I totally get it. I LOVE seeing a great brand kit and beautiful logos—this is important work! But visual identity is just one piece of the branding puzzle.

Focusing only on visuals can leave crucial intangible elements out in the cold. Defining your core values, vision, mission, and brand voice is where the real magic happens. That’s what makes your brand unforgettable and builds genuine connections with your audience.

If I could give any advice to entrepreneurs working through a new business idea or those who haven't done this work yet—take time to think through these intangible aspects of your brand. Write them down and use them as a guide for how your brand interacts with the world.

Once you have those, your visual identity should amplify, affirm, and complement who your business is at its core.

Plus, when you're working with an amazing brand designer or communications pro, they’ll usually ask for these essential brand elements to ensure they’re accurately reflecting and executing your vision. They’ll thank you for having these things written down and established.
