Microsoft 365 Copilot shouldn't wait until enterprise-wide rollout to be measured and managed. That work starts in the pilot.

A pilot, or proof of value, is the first opportunity to understand AI usage, identify risk, and build the governance model needed to scale.

That's where Microsoft's Copilot Control System steps in.

It helps leaders close the gap between enabling Copilot and proving that it's secure, governed, and worth the investment.

Because successful AI transformation depends on more than adoption.

It requires the right controls, measurement, and support structures so Copilot can scale responsibly and deliver real business value.

Learn more about the Copilot Control System in our blog on the three Microsoft AI governance tools leaders should know.

John Siefert has a simple way of helping people gut-check how their workdays are really spent.

He calls it the Activity Spectrum.

The idea is to look at your day across three modes of work. For many people, it often breaks down into a rough 70-20-10 split:

70% Reactive Work: Responding to emails, messages, requests, issues, and updates.

20% Active Work: Collaborating with colleagues, partners, or customers to solve problems and move decisions forward.

10% Proactive Work: Thinking, imagining, planning, and considering what could be possible.

It's not meant to be a perfect formula.
It's a reflection exercise.

When John asks people to map their own workdays this way, the pattern usually becomes clear pretty quickly: proactive work is the hardest to protect, and often the first thing to disappear.

That matters because proactive work is where better ideas, smarter decisions, and real transformation tend to begin.

As AI and automation reduce some of the reactive load, the bigger opportunity isn't just speed.

It's creating more room for people to do the strategic, proactive work they rarely get enough time for.

How would your workday break down across reactive, active, and proactive work?

This blog series was developed from a Fireside Chat at the 365 Leadership Summit with Geoff Ables, CEO of C5 Insight, and John Siefert, CEO of Cloud Wars and Dynamic Communities. The conversation explored what leaders are experiencing as AI reshapes how work gets done and what that means for leadership itself.
