I recently received a call on the CCP Tech help line from a stranger who was "returning my call" to ask me to stop bothering them about IT services. Not only had I never called this person before, but I learned that some third party has been spoofing our name and number and trying to impersonate US! So, what can be done to protect yourself from getting scammed by spoof callers? First consider using a VOIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) phone system, such as Microsoft Teams. It uses your internet connection to make and receive calls, while securing your calls and data.
CCP Tech can further help your business with our weekly cybersecurity micro trainings. These short 2-to-3-minute segments can make your team aware of the tactic's cybercriminals use and give helpful tips on safeguards. While this cannot prevent cybercriminals from spoofing your legitimate phone number, like they did ours, it can protect your business as you receive their calls. Your system will be able to distinguish fake calls from factual calls, separating fake from fact.
We recommend reporting incidents like these to government agencies such as the FCC (Federal Communications Commission), the FTC (Federal Trade Commission), or the FBI's IC3 (Federal Bureau of Investigation Internet Crime Complaint Center).
