At first glance, a 1,200 plus day Duolingo streak might seem like a fun personal quirk. But for Dr. Brent Matthews, it says a lot about his deep commitment to all things in his life – family, friends, and his patients.

As a surgeon, chair for the Department of Surgery at Wake Forest University School of Medicine, and vice president of surgical specialties for Atrium Health, Dr. Matthews is known for precision, preparation and putting patients first. His dedication to daily routines is evident in his work as a surgeon, and the devotion he demonstrates toward family and long-standing friendships influences his leadership style — marked by collaboration, humility, and genuine respect for everyone.

As a devoted husband and father of three, his values guide the decisions he’s made throughout his career, grounding his leadership in impact over recognition.

Dr. Matthews recently served as president of the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES), where he focused on connecting surgeons to purpose — advancing education, expanding global surgical outreach and strengthening lifelong learning.

We’re proud to have Dr. Matthews at Atrium Health — a leader whose personal values and professional work are deeply aligned.
