In downtown Charleston where historic homes sit shoulder to shoulder, an empty parcel of land is almost unheard of. Yet for decades, a sliver of unoccupied space remained in Radcliffeborough, one of the city’s most established historic neighborhoods.⚜️

Due to its non-conforming 30’ x 100’ footprint and strict zoning and preservation regulations, it was largely avoided until Boyd Architects took on the challenge in 2025. They looked to the formal Charleston Single House, pulling key elements from the classic structure to create a modern interpretation that now sits comfortably between its historic neighbors.

The Radcliffe House is clad in Belle Meade brick, laid in horizontal and vertical running bond patterns to create subtle shadow play across the home. Around the openings, Flemish bonds with recessed headers serve as a nod to the historic shutters commonly seen in the area.
