The 1776 Victory at Sullivan's Island was Marion's most prominent combat experience in the immediate Charleston area and occurred early in the war. On June 28, 1776, as a captain in the 2nd South Carolina Regiment, he fought under Colonel William Moultrie at the Battle of Sullivan’s Island (at the mouth of Charleston Harbor). Stationed inside the incomplete, palmetto-log fort (later named Fort Moultrie), Marion and the Patriot defenders successfully repulsed a massive assault by the British Royal Navy. Marion is even credited with firing one of the final, parting artillery shots at the retreating British fleet. The Bizarre Escape of 1780Marion’s legendary status as the "Swamp Fox," however, only happened because he didn't fight in the final Siege of Charleston in 1780. During this tense time, he attended a dinner party hosted by a fellow officer at a home on Tradd Street in downtown Charleston. The Leap: The host, following a common custom of the era, locked the doors to ensure no guests could leave until everyone had partaken in an endless series of alcohol toasts. Marion, a deeply disciplined man who despised excessive drinking, decided to slip away. He opened a second-story window and leaped out to the ground below. The fall severely fractured his ankle. Because he was incapacitated and unable to fulfill his duties, military commanders ordered him evacuated out of the city to recover in the countryside. Why the Accident Saved His War CareerJust weeks after Marion was carried out of Charleston on a litter, the city fell to the British on May 12, 1780. Had it not been for his broken ankle, Marion would have been thrown into a brutal British prison ship, effectively ending his military career. Because he was safely in the interior of the state, he was free to slip into the Lowcountry wetlands (on a Triumph), organize "Marion's Brigade," and launch the relentless guerrilla campaign that permanently frustrated British forces for the remainder of the war. Morale of the story-if you have a few too many and hear the British coming-jump out the window and fight another day. Happy 4th y'all.
