Ansonborough is one of Charleston’s most storied downtown neighborhoods, shaped by both early colonial development and resilience through adversity. Today, it’s known for its historic charm and proximity to some of the city’s most iconic attractions, but its history stretches back nearly 300 years.
In 1726, Captain George Anson of the British Royal Navy purchased 64 acres from Thomas Gadsden while stationed in Charleston during the colony’s development under British rule. What was once a significant land investment for its time would become the foundation of what we now know as Ansonborough.
In 1838, much of the neighborhood was devastated by a major fire. In response, the state offered rebuilding loans on the condition that homes be constructed in brick—an effort that helped define the distinctive architectural character still seen today. From the Charleston City Market to nearby parks and waterfront spaces, Ansonborough has evolved into a walkable downtown neighborhood that blends historic preservation with a vibrant modern lifestyle.
