Created in 1997 by activist Ben Haith and illustrator Lisa Jeanne Graf, the Juneteenth flag features a white star — symbolizing freedom and new beginnings — with a nod to Texas, the Lone Star State, where the last enslaved people were freed.

The bursting star represents a new horizon for Black Americans.
The red, white, and blue colors echo the American flag — a reminder that those freed on Juneteenth, and their descendants, are rightfully and proudly Americans.
