CRi
You are not alone π
Approximately 1 in 17 people in the United States will experience PTSD during their lifetime. If you or someone you know is living with PTSD, know that support is available and that healing and recovery are possible.
As PTSD Awareness Month comes to a close, let's continue learning, listening, and supporting one another. Every act of kindness, every conversation, and every effort to reduce stigma helps create a more compassionate and inclusive community.
PTSD symptoms may look different in people π
PTSD symptoms may look different in people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. It may be expressed through changes in behavior, mood, or daily routines rather than through symptoms people typically associate with trauma.
Verbal communication is not always possible for individuals with I/DDβs so itβs important to recognize the signs.
PTSD can affect the body, not just the mind. π
Many people are surprised to learn that trauma can show up in physical ways, too. People living with PTSD may experience symptoms like headaches, chronic pain, sleep difficulties, fatigue, or other health challenges.
These symptoms are a reminder that mental and physical health are deeply connected. When we better understand the effects of trauma, we can respond with greater empathy and support.
Let's continue creating communities where people feel seen, understood, and supported on their journey toward recovering.

We are incredibly grateful to Rebuilding Together Arlington/Fairfax/Falls Church and KW Metro Center for making a lasting impact on two CRi homes during RED Day, Keller Williams' annual day of service, where they rolled up their sleeves and got their hands dirty.
These volunteers spent the day beautifying our properties, creating brighter, more welcoming environments for the individuals we support.
Abdul Iddrisu, Program Manager at Park Road, said it best:
"You have added not only color to brighten our house but also joy that has brightened our hearts. The individuals immediately noticed the beautiful changes when they returned from the Day Program. Their faces lit up as they shared their impressions and expressed how happy the new environment made them feel."
Thank you to every volunteer who helped make this transformation possible. βοΈ

Support matters. π
After a traumatic experience, having people who listen, care, and offer support can make a meaningful difference. Studies show that individuals with strong social support systems are often better able to cope with and recover from trauma.
Sometimes support looks like checking in on a friend, lending an ear, or simply reminding someone that they don't have to face challenges alone.
Let's continue building communities where people feel seen, supported, and connected.
